Kirsch, a golden lab service dog, graduated with an honorary Master’s of Science in Counselling degree from John Hopkins University. How you ask? Kirsch attended the school with his owner Carlos and sat through every one of his classes. So when Carlos graduated this past May, so did Kirsch. He even go his own cap and gown, fitting in nicely with the rest of the graduates.

Vidar, a Belgian Malinois, was based in Afghanistan and is credited with saving the lives of many soldiers when he sniffed out hidden Taliban weapons. Years later, Vidar began showing signs of PTSD - a condition that is more common in humans, but can affect animals in combat as well. Scheduled to be put down, his life was saved by Angie, a medic and one of the soldiers whose life Vidar had saved. She brought him home with her where he is now recovering peacefully.

A rescue dog waits his turn to be cleaned after spending hours searching through the mud for survivors. A number of dogs have been working around the clock since a fatal mudslide took place on March 22 in Washington state. So far 21 people have been confirmed dead. Dogs can lose their sensing ability if they are overworked so they will be given a much needed break this week.

Last December, Amber, a golden retriever, was rescued from a kennel. A few weeks ago, she proved her worth when she saved her owner who had been injured in a snowmobile accident. Stuck in the snow and unable to move, Amber kept him warm through the night and tracked down help. Luckily the man is expected to make a full recovery thanks to his canine companion.

Hunter, a husky mix, had been recently adopted from the Humane Society when he woke his owners by whining loudly in the middle of the night. Thinking he needed to go outside they took him out, only to have him sit in the yard and continue to whine. Taking him back to bed he continued to whine and led them to the kitchen. It was there they noticed the stove burner was on and was leaking gas. Once the stove was off, Hunter was asleep within minutes.

Meet Charlie, who stood her ground when robbers broke into the family home. After chasing them down the street, she was shot in the leg twice. Her family couldn’t afford the vet bills so they sent her to a shelter where a crowdfunding campaign was started. The good news? They raised enough money so Charlie could receive her treatment and return home. The downside - her leg was so badly damaged it had to be amputated. But her family doesn’t mind, they are just happy to have her home.

Toby, a golden retriever, is best friends with Stewart the cat. When Stewart didn’t return home one day, his owners didn’t think much of it, but Toby knew something was wrong. He led his owners out to the garden where they found Stewart injured and unable to move. It’s believed he was hit by a car and dragged himself home until Toby found him. Luckily Stewart made a full recovery thanks to his canine pal.

Pesto, a black lab, was training to become a service dog when he met two disabled boys - one with autism, the other with a spinal disorder - at a library in Colorado. Although it was love at first sight, Pesto had to continue with his training. Expected to pass with flying colours, Pesto instead failed his last exam and was returned to Colorado and adopted by the boys’ family. The boys’ mother believes Pesto knew where he was needed and is now helping the boys learn to read and walk on their own.

Troy, an award-winning Doberman, is credited with saving the life of his owner Diane after she detected a lump in her breast. Troy’s constant nuzzling into her chest caused her to notice a 3cm lump. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy and is now cancer-free. It is believed many dogs can detect cancer before humans because they can smell the chemical reaction taking place within the body.

Pittsburgh police paid their respects to one of their own last week in a memorial to Rocco, a member of the K9 unit who succumbed to his injuries. Rocco had been chasing a suspect when he was stabbed in the chest and was unable to recover. Flags across the city were lowered to half-staff in his honour.
